We Have Doubles!

(Our first Calendula)

It is so wonderful being able to see everyone’s gardens and photos this year. The internet is a wonderful thing! I saw a banana flower for the first time at The Green Box Garden. I came across the most beautiful pink and white Double Peony that Drucilla Mott posted here.

Two things are funny about that. The first is I always loved the look of peony but asked my mom not to put them in our garden because they only last so long and I can’t stand all the petals on the ground. I remember at my Gran’s, she had a huge bush out front, it was all I could do not to yank it out! There were always brown petals everywhere you looked. If I tried to tidy it up, she’d get upset. I vowed never to grow one at my house.

After Gran passed on, there were legal issues and the house sat vacant for a year. We weren’t able to clean up or do anything. The yard went to pot! By the time everything was settled, the flowers had bloomed, and gone. I never had flower gardens then. I wouldn’t have known if something was a weed or a keeper. All I did know is that I wanted to dig some of them up to still have a part of her. She loved her gardens!

We dug up a bunch of stuff, not knowing everything we had. Mom said there was a small peony plant out back and really wanted it. I caved. We had no idea what kind it was. This year, once everything blooms we might get a few surprises!

So the other night I went out and took a few snapshots of things that were about ready to open:

(The peony) (Poppy)

The next morning I woke up to this:

It’s a double peony! Not only that, the base has the slightest shade of pink. LOL! Not anywhere near as striking or bold as Drucilla’s but how uncanny!

Just look at this Poppy!

I have no idea what these are:

I’ll look them up one day!

Happy Gardening and thanks to everyone who share their gardens with us!

What a Difference a Week Makes

Things are finally starting to look half decent in the flower gardens.

The rock garden.

The log garden.

The new garden.

The greenhouse seedlings need to be put into new containers. It’s hard to keep up!

The Calendula.

Feverfew with Anise Hyssop.

You can read about our Anise Hyssop here.

Watermelon.

Zucchini.

Bamboo. I didn’t think it would come back!

We don’t remember planting this. We don’t even know what it is. At first we thought it might be a Calla Lily. But after a few days watching the leaves unravel, it doesn’t seem to be one. Can anyone tell me what it is?

What is this?

I am still clearing the back lot:

It’s going to be a year or so before I finish. But I will finish it!

I did find an axe head (One heavy sucker!) and a glass vial of some sort while raking. I posted it in the Object du Jour section (tab up top).

We have done a few more things since these pictures were taken.

Hope your gardens are doing well!  :)

Pot Marigold (Calendula)

Not only is the Pot Marigold a great garden flower adding color and beauty to your landscape, it is known for how long it continues to bloom. A constant supply of bright and cheery sunshine!

We chose to plant it because of the health benefits. And there is a long list of them here.

We dried these flower heads last year. This is our tea supply. Just throw some in a tea ball and steep.  Sometimes we will make a big pot. I drink mine plain, my husband adds a touch of honey to his. Either way, it tastes wonderful.

It makes the best iced tea! Try it, you won’t be disappointed.  :)
